Overplay SmartDNS not working on Netflix
Update : 28/2/2015: It’s now working again. We have added this to our checks on our status page.
We recently reported that Overplay wasn’t unlocking RTE anymore and now it appears that NetFlix can be added to this category. Previously you were able to view Netflix from the following locations:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Brazil
- Canada – Still working
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany- Still working
- Ireland
- Japan
- Latin America
- Luxembourg
- Netherlands
- Norway
- Singapore
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom
- United States
Using this functionality you could log into Overplay on your device, and tell their DNS servers to operate like you were in a different country. This could then unlock some extra content, like Breaking Bad on Netflix US or BBC programs on Netflix UK.
Now when using OverPlay’s SmartDNS, when you try to connect to Netflix.com / NetFlix.co.uk, etc. the connection will fail, and won’t return any error. Users on AppleTVs / PlayStations have told us that they are not experiencing the same issues.
DNS servers effected
- 173.234.163.178 & 97.107.141.156
- 176.67.84.19 & 178.79.166.52
Work around
For now you can use Netflix Canada to get most (if not all) Netflix US content. Thanks to Ryan for this tip.
We haven’t heard from OverPlay directly about this, but we assume that they are well aware of the situation after some people are discovering the disappointment of not being able to watch their favourite shows this weekend.
