Here’s a new service that came across our desk today, a proxy service for phone numbers, www.numberproxy.com. NumberProxy allows you to get a temporary phone number to make and receive phone calls, to send and receive SMS’s with this new number. You can also send incoming calls directly do a voice mailbox which you can access at a later stage.

Number proxy is good for hiding your idenity from people, but of course it’s not to be used for illegal activities. In their FAQ they say :

We do keep backups of our data for 24 hours and should these records be subpoenaed, we will cooperate with law enforcement. Remember these records are all tied to your primary phone number. NumberProxy is great if you are trying to protect your phone number from other people. If you are trying to protect your phone number or conversations from the police or equivalent, it’s probably best to seek another solution.

NumberProxy use cases

This service can be handy for giving your phone number our for time limited things, like selling your house, classified ads or seeking a new job. There is nothing worse having recruiters calling you day and night when you are no longer looking for a job. Once you are done with the number you can cancel your contract and all calls will be rejected and saved messages will be deleted. NumberProxy accepts PayPal or BitCoins so your transaction is that little bit more anonymous. They have various plans, based on a credit system. So the more you use it the more expensive it costs.

Numberproxy is a product by www.layer4.net, a US based VOIP business.

Similar services

Another similar service for virtual numbers is www.flextel.com, who even have some free services for getting virtual phone numbers. We haven’t used either service ourselves, if you have a review that you would like to add, please attach in a comment to this post.

Guide to enabling a secure VPN connection on your iPhone. 4 simple steps to surf the web anonymously and securely. For this you will need an iPhone (or iPad or iPod Touch) and a subscription to a VPN service provider. Read full →

Rating: 9.2/10 (10 votes cast)

Here is our step by step guide to getting your VPN setup on your iPhone. The steps for your iPad / iPod touch are similar and you should probably be able to figure that out yourself. This is a post that we had planned to put on VPN.ie, but for some reason this blog gets more readers, so it’s probably more useful here.

Step 1 : get your iPhone

Our iPhone looks like this, the settings screen is the last icon on the 2nd row.

Step 2 : Enter Settings

This is the top of the settings screen. Here you can control lots parts of your phone, but we are only interested in the VPN setting. So click that one that says VPN – not connected.

Step 3 : Select a configuration or create a new one

Many VPN providers can provide you with a file that you can open on your phone that will load in the details of your VPN server, your username & password. It’s possible to have more than one configuration. We are using Overplay here and we have settings for Ireland, the UK and the US. This allows us to switch easily between different VPN gateways. To add a new VPN connection on your iPhone click Add VPN configuration…

Step 4 :Entering your VPN details

We won’t show you a blank setting page, rather you can see our settings for a real VPN connection. Here the description can be set to anything you wish, it’s the label that you see in step 3 of this guide. Then you have the the server address, this can be an IP address or a sever name like we have in our example. The account will be your username that’s supplied by your VPN provider. We leave the RSA SecurID off. The password is like any password field, it will hide your password a few seconds after you type it. We generally leave the other settings like encryption level and Send all traffic to their defaults just for simplicity.

Once you have the config done you can go back to the last screen, and toggle the VPN on / off button.

And there you have it, now your iPhone is connected to your VPN and you can surf the web as if you are in a different country. You don’t need any type of special iPhone app to connect to the VPN, you can just enter in the settings outlined above. We use our VPN a lot when using public WiFi, as you never can trust if someone’s router is entirely safe or not.

Pick a good VPN

If you are looking for a VPN we can recommend our VPN comparison page which breaks down the main features of each of the VPN providers we’ve tested and trust.

Here’s something that we just noticed during the week, that there is a way to avoid ads on YouTube and other online video websites. While I know that websites have to have ads in order to remain in business, but sometimes watching 10+ minutes of ads for an hour of TV online is really just too much. Many of them simply just repeat the same ads over and over again. If you are using a VPN to watch these shows you may not even be able to buy these products. Here’s a tip if you use Google Chrome for your browser, so you can skip being subjected to the barrage of ads, and get watching that video online.

Get AdBlock

AdBlock on Chrome Web Store chromeadblock.com

This Chrome extension will help you block ads. Here’s their latest update to the extension.

NEW IN VERSION 2.5: Blocks ads in ALL videos and in ALL Flash games across the web!

So no waiting to play your favorite game or watch that Youtube video.

What sites does it block ads on?

These are the sites that we’ve checked:

Youtube : Yes

Channel 4 oD : Yes

Hulu : No

Do you know of any other sites that it blocks ads for ?

Get AdBlock

AdBlock settings

You can find AdBlock on the Chrome Web Store. We particularly like the fact that you can just enable the ad blocker per domain name, or you can pause it easily with one click of a button. We aren’t anti-ads on the web, but sometimes they are just too much.

We don’t know how long this tip will work for, and we do expect that the major video websites to try to close these loop holes.

If you have any tips on how you make your video watching online more pleasurable please let us know in the comments, we’d love to hear them !

The Ireland vs. France game is this weekend. Kick off at the Aviva Stadium is at 17:00 (Irish time, it will be shown on RTE2 & BBC). This one is considered to be the big one to avoid the wooden spoon this year and the further shame to Declan Kidney’s struggle to get results in the 6-nations. Ireland started out quite well in their campaign, beating Wales at away in Cardiff, but now after two defeats in a row Ireland need a win. The team has suffered some injuries with Simon Zebo & Johnny Sexton. The team is captains by Jamie Heaslip, and Brian O’Driscoll is back in the squad, and Paddy Jackson will be taking Ronan O’Gara’s place at out half.

A win and we’re clear of the embarrassment of the wooden spoon (the prize for the worst performing team at the 6 nations), and France will be well on target for it. If we lose, it goes down to the last round of games where we are scheduled to play Italy on the 16th of March at Stadio Olimpico. Italy are the other spoon contender. Some say it’s more it’s more exciting at the bottom than top right now !

Is this the year that Ireland bring back the Championship Trophy, or at least the Triple Crown Trophy ? Ireland last won the competition in 2009. The last time Ireland had to wait 24 years between wins, 1985–2009, hopefully this isn’t the case for the next time. Waiting until 2024 isn’t really an option.

Filmon & aertv offer UK and Irish TV to watch via their streaming service. To use these services you will need to have a UK or Irish IP address, as the content is limited to people in those regions. The quality of the streaming from these websites is really quite good, and some even offer streams in HD if you want to pay for the quality. Watching TV online has never been easier ! Read full →

Rating: 8.6/10 (16 votes cast)

Some of the TV stations, like Channel 4, only allow you watch shows after they’ve aired. But what about when you want to watch them live ? Here are two websites that will come in handy to allow you to watch TV online streamed to your computer. These sites are perfectly legal to use as long as you are either in the UK or Ireland and you have a valid TV license.

If you enjoy watching live TV as much as we do you will love these websites !

Filmon – Watch UK TV

Our first website for watching live TV, is filmon (www.filmon.com), where you can watch :

BBC 1, 2, 1 Northern Ireland, News

ITV 1, 2, 3, 4

Channel 4 & 5

E4

More4

5USA

Its as simple as visting the website with your UK IP address, and clicking play. There is sometimes a few quick ads to get started, but once the 30 second ad is done, that’s it for your session. There are extra features available if you created a user account. You can for example get access to other premium channels or get the live TV feed in HD, but we didn’t have time to register for the sake of this quick blog post.

Filmon does have Android and iOS apps for your mobile phones and tablet devices. The service seems to stream the content in a high enough quality.

http://ww.filmon.com/

aertv – Watch Irish TV

Our second website for watching live TV, is aertv (www.aertv.ie), where you can watch :

RTE 1, 2, news now, junior

3

TG4

3e

Dáil & Seanad Éireann

aerTV

Unravel Travel

France24

Its as simple as visting the website with your Irish IP address, and clicking play. AerTV is run by Magnet.ie, an Irish broadband provider. Their model is to provide the Irish channels for free, and you can purchase access to an impressive 16 channels for €3.99 / month. For this you will get access to BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, VIVA, CBBC, CBeebies, Comedy Central Extra, Nickelodean, Nick Jr., Nick Toons, BBC News and Euro News.

We were impressed with the quality that aertv delivers the streaming TV and it’s more than good enough to watch on your laptop or connect it to your TV via an AppleTV over Airplay.

http://www.aertv.ie/

Other free streaming websites

Watching TV online has never been easier ! If you know of any other streaming TV websites please let us know in the comments !

Some interesting news comes this week, if you are outside Ireland, USA, Canada or Australia. Setanta Sports have a new offering with the online video streaming website, UStream.TV. They have a number of the games available to watch for free including the U21s, Intermediate and Senior Camogie games, while the Senior Hurling and Football All Ireland games, like Mayo versus Donegal next weekend, come at a cost. It seems that each of the premium games will cost $9.99 to watch. It’s not clear if you only have to pay once to watch the games, but we think it’s per game. See below for the full schedule.

Priced at $9.99 or about €7.60, it is a bit dear to watch 70 minutes of hurling or football. We are sure it will be of interest to some of our readers looking for a fully legal way to watch the All Irelands from abroad. The reason for the exclusion in the United States, Canada & Australia is due to existing online licensing rights. And if you are in Ireland you can already watch RTE online to see all of these games, for free.

It’s not just the live games that are shown, you will also be able to watch the post match analysis show The Sunday Game also online.

Here is their press release :

SETANTA SPORTS GAA CHANNEL GOES FREE FOR GAA FANS ABROAD THIS WEEKEND

Setanta Sports recently announced their brand new service, which gives users outside of Ireland, the United States, Canada and Australia the ability to stream live GAA Championship matches online. “Watch GAA Online” ensures GAA fans from all over the world are not deprived of catching all the best live GAA action – wherever they may be.

Setanta showing All Ireland games for $9.99 via UStream.TV

The channel has already streamed some pivotal fixtures this season; including last weekend’s All-Ireland Hurling Final draw between Kilkenny and Galway, as well both All Ireland Senior Football Championship Semi Finals.

A spokesperson for Setanta Sports commented:

“There are Irish communities all over the world and we are delighted to be able to bring them live GAA Championship matches on a weekly basis. Our dedicated GAA channel is the first of its kind in the available territories and ensures that GAA fans living abroad don’t miss out on any GAA action. Users can avail of our service by purchasing individual matches or alternatively a season long pass, of which was very popular with GAA fans earlier in the season.

We believe that our channel can become a hub for GAA users worldwide and allow them to engage with like-minded GAA fans through the social function on our channel. We are delighted to announce that we will be broadcasting this weekend’s live GAA matches completely free for users in the available territories. We believe that this gives users that have not already experienced our service a great chance to trial our channel ahead of the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championship Finals. ”

“Watch GAA Online” individual match passes are available for purchase on our website Setanta.com/WatchGAAOnline or directly via the channel page http://www.ustream.tv/GAAOnlinePPV

Donegal will play Mayo on the third weekend in September. Mayo after beating the favourites Dublin, 0-19 to 0-16, secured their place in the final. Mayo at one stage by a massive 10 points, and will be a team to reckon with for Donegal, who also had an impressive game against Cork in the semi-final.

It’s the first ever senior football final between the two teams, and it will surely be one to remember. Donegal hasn’t won an All Ireland title for 20 years, while it’s been 61 long years for Mayo. Either way it will be a great day for football, and perhaps it shows a new era for Gaelic football in Ireland with these teams reaching the final.

Ireland’s newest provider of VPNs (Virtual Private Servers) has just launched. VPN.ie will allow you to encrypt your internet traffic and surf the internet with confidence. Unsecured internet connections, such as free WiFi in cafés and bars, can monitor and sniff & steal your private data. By using a VPN you secure your connection from your computer to a secure remote server, from there it then travels to your chosen server. Cases of identity theft in Ireland happen every day, and it’s important that you take precautions with your private information online.

Using a VPN has three main advantages :

Secure your internet traffic from prying eyes

Keep your website usernames and passwords private

Avoid geographical content restrictions

VPN when travelling

For example when travelling abroad some countries may restrict website access. Countries like to United Arab Emirates UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), Bahrain, Brazil and China, certain websites, for example Facebook or Twitter, are no longer accessible. With a VPN you can surf anonymously and securely.

VPN technology is extensively used by medium and large size companies & corporations to allow access to their network when their employees are travelling outside their office. This allows employees to access files and folders on the company network in a simple and secure manner. VPNs are particularly important when transmitting sensitive information.
